A critical error has occurred at the site!

A customer in Yawata, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, asked us to restore his blog because it was displayed as “A serious error has occurred on the site” and he was unable to view it.

Investigation (to determine the cause of something)

I looked into the cause and it seemed to be quite deep-rooted; I tried various versions of WordPress and disabling plugins, but none of them were applicable.

I managed to log into the main admin page on my phone and was able to view the blog by disabling the sitemap generator plugin, but when I updated the theme, the same problem reappeared.

I created a test site and disabled all plugins, but when I updated the theme, it reappeared, so I presumed that the problem was most likely with a newer version of the theme.

A look at the theme’s forum revealed that this phenomenon is caused by a low PHP version. I checked the PHP version on the server and found that the deprecated older version was selected, so I set it to the recommended newer version. This solved the problem.

The cause

The cause was an outdated version of PHP on the server. This is an area where the version is not automatically changed, so you need to update it yourself on a regular basis, which seems to be the cause of the problem.

We are glad we were able to solve the problem successfully. The customer was also satisfied.

Thank you very much for choosing my company.
